What age can my child start Taekwon-do?
Our regular starting age is 5 years old.
For children as young as 4, we may offer an evaluation lesson to determine whether they are ready to participate successfully in our program.
What happens when a student turns 13?
Children’s Classes are for students through age 12.
Beginning at age 13, students transition into our Family and Adult Classes unless otherwise directed by the school.
Do you offer classes for adults?
Yes.
Our Family and Adult Classes are open to students age 13 and above and include teenagers and adults of different ranks and experience levels.
No previous martial arts experience is required.
Can children attend Family Classes?
Yes, but children attending a Family Class must be accompanied by a parent who is also participating in the class.
We generally recommend that children be at least Yellow Belt before attending Family Classes. This helps ensure they have enough familiarity with the curriculum and class structure to follow along comfortably without becoming discouraged.
Do I need previous martial arts experience?
No.
Many of our students begin with no previous martial arts background.
We introduce new students gradually so they can become familiar with the basic techniques, expectations, and structure of the program before entering regular group classes.
What is the free introductory private lesson?
For many younger beginners, typically children age 10 and under, we offer a free introductory private lesson before enrollment.
This gives the student and family an opportunity to meet an instructor, experience our teaching style, ask questions, and see whether Taekwon-do feels like a good fit.
What happens after enrollment?
Once enrolled, new students receive their school uniform and school T-shirt and begin their introductory private lessons.
These lessons help the student become familiar with basic techniques, class expectations, and the training environment before attending regular group classes.
How many introductory private lessons do new students receive?
New students may receive up to three introductory private lessons before beginning regular group classes.
After each private lesson, the next private lesson is scheduled.
What happens after the introductory private lessons?
After completing the introductory process, students attend the regular classes that correspond with their age and rank.
Regular group classes do not need to be individually scheduled.
Students simply attend the classes on the schedule for which they are eligible.
Which classes can beginners attend?
Beginner Classes are for:
White Belts and Yellow Stripes
These classes focus on building strong fundamentals before students move into the broader class schedule.
Which classes are available to Yellow Belts and above?
Students who have reached Yellow Belt or higher may attend:
- All Levels Classes
- Test Review Classes
- Sparring Classes
Eligibility may also depend on age and any specific direction provided by the school.
What is the belt progression?
Our belt progression is:
White Belt → Yellow Stripe → Yellow Belt → Green Stripe → Green Belt → Blue Stripe → Blue Belt → Red Stripe → Red Belt → Black Belt
Each rank builds upon the material learned previously.
Is there a separate curriculum for children?
No.
Children, teenagers, and adults learn from the same core Taekwon-do curriculum.
For younger students, we adapt the way the material is taught so they can understand and perform the same techniques in an age-appropriate way.
This allows training to continue naturally from childhood through the teenage years and into adulthood.
How do students advance to the next belt?
Students progress by developing the knowledge, technical ability, consistency, and understanding expected for their current rank.
Advancement is not based simply on the amount of time a student has been enrolled.
Our instructors provide ongoing feedback and help students prepare for future testing.
How do I know when I am ready to test?
Our instructors monitor each student’s progress during regular training and Test Review Classes.
Students are encouraged to focus on understanding and properly performing the required material rather than rushing toward the next rank.
Testing readiness is based on demonstrated preparation.
Do you accept students from other martial arts schools?
Yes.
Students with previous Taekwon-do or martial arts experience are welcome.
We begin with an evaluation so our instructors can better understand the student’s previous training, rank, knowledge of techniques, and ability to properly perform those techniques.
Will my previous belt rank automatically transfer?
Previous rank is taken into consideration, but placement is not based solely on the belt previously earned.
Final placement is based on the student’s knowledge and demonstrated ability in relation to our curriculum and program standards.
Our goal is to provide a fair and appropriate starting point.
Can families train together?
Yes.
Family members may be able to train together depending on age, rank, and class eligibility.
For children attending a Family Class, a participating parent or guardian must accompany them.
We generally recommend that children be at least Yellow Belt so they have enough experience to comfortably follow the pace and structure of the class.
Is sparring required?
Sparring is part of the broader Taekwon-do training experience for students who have reached Yellow Belt and above.
Is protective equipment required for sparring?
Yes.
Appropriate protective sparring equipment is required for participation in sparring classes and other training where protective equipment is necessary.
Our instructors will provide guidance regarding required equipment.
What should I wear for an introductory lesson?
Comfortable athletic clothing is appropriate for an introductory lesson unless otherwise instructed.
Once enrolled, students receive their school uniform and school T-shirt.
Can parents watch classes?
Yes, parents and guardians may observe classes.
However, we ask that classes remain uninterrupted while instruction is taking place so students can maintain their focus and instructors can conduct the class effectively.
Questions or concerns are best addressed with an instructor before or after class.
How often should students attend class?
We recommend training 2–3 times per week for consistent progress.
Regular attendance helps students retain material, build stronger fundamentals, and continue developing with confidence.
If attending 2–3 classes each week is not possible, we encourage students to supplement their training with additional practice at home.
Current members also have access to our proprietary online video database, which can be used as a training resource to review techniques and support continued practice outside of class.
What happens if I miss a class?
Students may attend other eligible classes on the schedule based on their age and rank.
Because regular classes are not individually scheduled, students have flexibility within the classes available to them.
We also encourage students to review and practice material at home when they are unable to attend class.
Are classes structured and disciplined?
Yes.
Structure, discipline, respect, responsibility, and self-control are important parts of our training environment.
Students are expected to listen, follow instruction, respect their instructors and fellow students, and take responsibility for their own training.
How do you maintain the cleanliness of the school?
Training equipment is cleaned and sanitized after use during each class.
The school is also cleaned daily, including vacuuming, mopping, equipment cleaning, and detailed bathroom cleaning.
We work to maintain a clean, comfortable, and well-maintained training environment for our students and families.
How do I get started?
The best first step is to contact us.
For many younger beginners, we begin with a free introductory private lesson.
For adults, families, or students with previous martial arts experience, we can discuss the most appropriate way to begin based on age, background, and experience.
