New Students

Starting Taekwon-do should feel clear, comfortable, and welcoming.

At Cha’s Taekwon-do, we take a gradual approach to introducing new students to our school so they can become familiar with our teaching style, expectations, and training environment before fully entering regular group classes.

Whether you are completely new to martial arts or already have previous training experience, we will help determine the most appropriate starting point.

For New Beginners

For many younger beginners, typically children age 10 and under, the first step is a free introductory private lesson.

This gives the student and family an opportunity to meet an instructor, experience our teaching style, and see whether Taekwon-do feels like a good fit before enrolling.

The introductory lesson also gives us an opportunity to observe how the student responds to instruction and to answer any questions the student or family may have.

There is no previous martial arts experience required.

Enrollment

Once a student decides to enroll, we complete the registration process and prepare them for the beginning of their training.

New students receive their school uniform and school T-shirt and schedule their first private lesson.

From there, we begin introducing the student to the basic techniques, expectations, and structure of our program.

Introductory Private Lessons

New students may receive up to three introductory private lessons before attending their first regular group class.

After each private lesson, we schedule the next private lesson so the student can build familiarity and confidence gradually.

These lessons allow us to introduce:

  • Basic stances and movement
  • Fundamental kicking and hand techniques
  • Proper class etiquette
  • Expectations within the training environment

The goal is not to have the student master everything before entering a group class.

Instead, the introductory lessons are designed to make the transition into regular training feel more comfortable and familiar.

Transitioning Into Group Classes

After completing the introductory private-lesson process, students begin attending the classes that correspond with their age and rank.

Beginning students attend our Beginner Classes, which are reserved for White Belts and Yellow Stripes.

Students do not need to individually schedule each regular class. They may attend the classes on our schedule for which they are eligible.

As students progress to Yellow Belt and above, they become eligible for our broader class schedule, including All Levels, Test Review, and Sparring Classes.

Experienced Students & Transfer Students

Students with previous Taekwon-do or martial arts experience are welcome.

Rather than automatically assigning a rank based solely on previous experience, we begin with an evaluation.

This allows our instructors to better understand the student’s:

  • Previous training background
  • Previous rank
  • Knowledge of techniques
  • Ability to properly perform those techniques
  • Familiarity with Taekwon-do
  • Overall compatibility with our curriculum

Previous rank and training experience are taken into consideration.

However, final placement is based on both the student’s knowledge of the required techniques and their demonstrated ability to perform them according to our program standards.

Our goal is to provide a fair and appropriate placement while allowing the student to transition smoothly into our training environment.

Families With Previous Experience

Families joining together are also welcome.

Each family member may have a different level of experience, age, or rank, so we evaluate each student individually.

After evaluation, each family member may attend the classes appropriate for their individual age and rank while continuing to train within the same overall program.

What Should I Wear?

For an introductory lesson, comfortable athletic clothing is appropriate unless otherwise instructed.

Once enrolled, students receive their school uniform and school T-shirt and will be given guidance on what is appropriate for regular classes.

As students progress, additional equipment may be required depending on the type of training they participate in.

Parents & Guardians

Parents and guardians are welcome to ask questions throughout the enrollment process.

We want families to understand how our program works, what is expected of students, and how progression takes place.

Our goal is to make the beginning of training as clear and comfortable as possible for both the student and the family.
